let the pen and pencil be x and y respectively.

5x +10y =30 (I)

and given
x = 3 + y

x-y=3 equation (ii)

x =3 +y
5(3+y) +10y =30
15 +5y +10y =30

15y =15
y= 1

and x =4

pencil cost = 1
pen cost = 4
