Hey Mate!!

Since you didn't mention which battery, let me tell about 9V Battery.

We need to add several qualifiers answering this question. One is the package type. The typical transistor radio 9 Volt Battery is in a PP3 package. This design is 60 years old. The rest of my answer will be in regards to this package. Next we have to talk about Battery chemistry. The original 9 Volt Battery was only available as a carbon-zinc. Today it is most commonly available as an Alkaline but NiMH are also being sold. Other chemistries have been made but are not common. I will address alkaline type.

9 volt alkaline batteries are not all the same as far a charge capacity. It ranges from 300 mA-Hrs to 500 mA-hrs. And this capacity depends on discharge rate. High discharge rates will result in a lower energy delivery. The maximum current is the short-circuit but that is a useless since no usable power is delivered unless you want to us the battery as a hand warmer. -not a good idea. So what is the maximum current? If we say that a load that reduces the terminal voltage by half, or 4.5 Volts, you can pull 1 to 3 Amps for a short period of time -less than a minute and the battery will get hot. For the maximum current for getting the max Amp-Hr capacity from the battery is about 28 mA. That gives you about 10 to 17 hours of service. In practical designs like smoke detectors the circuit needs to draw less than 100 uA so that you only need to change out the battery once a year.

What about a 110V outlet in the States?

This is an easy. In the USA most outlets are on 15Amp breakers (<1.8 kW loads), For certain applications there are outlets on 20 Amp breakers (<2.4 kW loads).

Hope this helps you!!
