yes it is correct the total energy of a body in motion is equal to the work done it can do before coming to rest.
For example a ball thrown on a glass pane window with an initial velocity will acquire kinetic energy as it is in motion it will do work on glass pane and thus break It before coming to rest, this work done is equal to a its kinetic energy. following the law of conservation of matter that energy can neither be created nor be destroyed and it can change from only one form to another form.
