Let the income of a be x then the income of b will be :

6000 - x

A saves 40%

This equals to :

0.4x

B saves 20%

This equals to :

0.2(6000 - x) = 1200 - 0.2x

Their savings are equal

Meaning:

1200 - 0.2x = 0.4x

1200 = 0.2x + 0.4x

1200 = 0.6x

x = 2000

Income of a is rs 2000
