Traffic, traffic everywhere; with no relief to commuters! Vehicles, vehicles everywhere; honking, spewing heat and poisonous emissions, with hellish din all around. Vehicles were invented for the convenience of man, but see their travesty; they have become a nuisance and a source of so much inconvenience for him. Have you ever seen long, endless lines of vehicles stuck in traffic snarl ups during peak hours in metropolitan cities in India? You will think you are stuck in hell! Fuel worth millions of rupees get wasted during the snarl ups! Poisonous gases are released in tons into the atmosphere. People get delayed to work! Many patients in transit in ambulances get more critical ─ some even die! Will there be an end to this chaos on roads in metropolitan cities?

If there is any country in this big vast world where laws, rules and regulations are flouted so flagrantly, it is India. Delhi is no exception. Such an utter lawlessness prevails everywhere ubiquitously all across the city. Nothing is in order! Traffic lights are hardly respected! Traffic rules are not followed in the least!

According to Delhi Traffic Police data in the year 2016 there were 754 fatal accidents in the city which killed 793 people. There were 6752 non fatal accidents in which 4193 people were injured.

The Traffic Police of the city must adopt proactive stance to the situation. There must be stricter traffic rules and punishments for offenders. Besides creating the proper traffic infrastructures such as wide roads, flyovers, bicycle roads road safety awareness programs and campaigns should be launched. More Metro Train routes should be added to the existing ones. Electric or solar buses should be plied to ease the growing traffic.

Since majority of the victims are children and adolescents, it becomes imperative to introduce learning road safety measures at schools. Schools must make road safety measures an integral part of curriculum. The traffic police must give training of road safety measures to students. They can be taken to road safety learning parks and trained there.

They must be taught good driving skills along with tolerant traffic attitude. At schools road safety weeks and days should be observed. Road safety seminars, workshops, and other similar programmes should be conducted. They must be shown the differences between good driving model and bad driving model. They must be taught that driving on roads is not fun or a child’s play. One must be totally prepared and trained to go on roads.
