the transfer of genetic material from one bacterium to another via virus is known as transduction.

this involves transfer of a piece of dna from donor to recipient bacterium trough bacteriophage. It is further of 2 types:

1. generalised transduction- in this the bacteriophage carry the genetic material from any part of donor bacterial genome, as in T4 bacteriophage.

2. specific transduction- the bacteriophage carry genetic material from a specific part of bacterial genome, as in λ-phage.

Transduction

Explanation:

Transduction can be defined as the technique by which genetic material is transferred from one bacterium to another by the help of virus.

Example is horizontal gene transfer. In case of transduction there is no need of the physical contact in between the two bacterium.

This technique is used by the biologist to introduce the foreign gene into the host.
