The Treasure Within

The Treasure Within" is a lesson based on a conversation between Ms. Bela Raja, the editor of the newspaper-'Sparsh' and Mr. Hafeez Contractor, one of India's leading architects. Hafeez Contractor was good at drawing sketches. But as a school boy he didn't do well in academics. He passed his exams only by copying.

Architect Hafeez Contractor is full of surprising and revolutionary ideas. He observes the face, clothes and manners of a client and gets an idea about his habit and tastes. This helps him to design for the client.

His designs are stimulating and spontaneous. His famous designs are Lake castle Building, Imperial Towers, MP Compound Mill, etc. At present, he is a member of the Bombay Heritage Committee and New Delhi Lutyens Bungalow Zone Review Committee.

Hafeez explains: "Architecture can give form to beliefs, and can make a building into a real and arresting symbol of brand intent."

The Treasure Within

This chapter is an interview between Mr Hafeez Contractor and Bela Raja about the schooling years of Hafeez Contractor. Hafeez Contractor was good in studies at the first two years of schooling but later he lost interest in studies from 3rd standard onwards. Mathematics was a nightmare for him and he often used to have a dream in which he had appeared for the maths exam without knowing anything.

As a student, he was more interested in playing and pranking others around. He was a great sportsman and was also the senior champion for several years. He had also been the captain of the school cricket team. He states in the interview that he had cleared his exams only through cheating. When he was in class 11th, the principal confronted him and gave him an advice. He told that, he was indeed a great student but he never studied. He told that by now he had been taking good care of him but now he had to learn how to take care of himself. He also explained that his mother was a single parent and had great expectations from him. The principal urged him to study.

Hafeez contractor took the piece of advice and followed it. He would now only ate, prayed and studied. After working this hard, he had achieved 50% marks in his SSC exams. Then Ms Bela asked him whether he was ever punished or not and he replied that he received canning almost every week but it didn't affect him since he was more bothered about playing. He was also known to be the gang leader and would also fight with others. He also told that one day he wasn't in a mood to study and played "chor police" for an entire hour.

After finishing school, he really wanted to join the army but his mother and aunt refused him from even being a police. With some sort of influence, he finally got admission in Jai Hind College. He had to study French but he was weak at it so he took his cousin's help. Her husband was an architect so he would go to his office to learn French.

One day while he was learning french, an employee came with a detailed drawing of a window which was really advanced drawing. When Hafeez Contractor looked at those drawings he stated that the window drawn was wrong and wouldn't open. Then the cousin's husband held a bet and told him to draw some specific things. He won the bet and the architect got really impressed and suggested him to study architecture.

In the college of architecture, a result of 80%-90% was required. The principal had allowed him to appear for entrance exams and told that he would only be allowed to go to the college if he gets good marks. He got an A+ and he always was the topper in his class throughout. After becoming an architect, he went to see one of his teachers who had once told him to become an architect. He says that his school life had made him street-smart and he would closely observe his clients to understand their taste and make them a spontaneous sketch.
