the turbine pits at the Niagara Falls are 50 m deep. The average horse power developed is 5000,the efficiency being 85 %.how much water passes through the turbine per minute?

Watt: 1 J/s  

====>  

5000 hp * 745.7 watt = 3,728,500 J/s  

That is equal to the useful potential energy of the water at the top  

===>  

3,728,500/.85 = 4,386,470.588 J/s Actual PE at top  

PE = MGH  

4,386,470.588 = M*9.8m/s*50m  

M = 8,952 kg of water per second  

M = 537,119 kg of water per minute

akarsh209: why. 85 is divided..... shouldn't it be multiplied as we have to find 85% of the power developed
