The Twelve Months is a beautiful Russian fairy tale with a moral that greediness will lose everything. The story is spun with a soft melancholy feeling around Maria, who is being tortured by her step-mother and step-sister, Helen. They both hate Maria since she is very beautiful and hence assign all the impossible tasks to her.
They asked for violets, strawberries, and apples in the cold winter months. Maria had to walk through the cold blizzards and thick snow where she meets the twelve months, who are actually personified. They bless her with the violets, apples and strawberries because of her polite manners and soft nature.
She took them and gave it to her sister and mother to their utter disbelief. Not feeling content what she had, her step-sister became greedy and went in search of the magical apple tree by herself. Upon reaching the twelve months, she did not care for them.
It started to snow and ice very severely and she got lost in the thick woods. Her mother also went in search of her daughter and never returned. Later, all the property came to Maria who later lived happily ever after.
