The twins, often called as Stars and the Stripes, troubled the ghost  so much that the poor phantom would begin shivering even at their mere thought. He became a victim of their constant practical pranks and faced humiliation at their hands on several occasions. Some of the pranks are:
During the ghost's first attempt to frighten the family, he faced humiliation when Mr. Otis offered him a bottle of lubricant. When he reached the top of the staircase, a door opened, the twins threw a large pillow on his head. The ghost disappeared in haste.
On one of the occasions, the ghost met with a serious fall by treading on a butter slide which the twins has constructed for him.
The ghost received the final blow on the 19th September. He had gone downstairs to the great entrance hall. As he was moving towards the library, two figures from a dark corridor jumped on him and shrieked 'Boo' in his ear.
