The two blocks are placed over each other as shown in figure. There is friction between two blocks but there is no friction between M and ground. A horizontal force F is applied on lower block so that both the blocks move together and friction between ‘A’ and ‘B’ is static in nature. For this situation mark the incorrect statement.

The work done by friction on ‘A’ is positive as observed from ground frame

The work done by friction force on ‘A’ is zero as observed from ground frame

The work done by friction on ‘A’ is zero as observed from a frame fixed to ‘B’

Total work done by friction from ground frame is zero

The incorrect statement is:

Total work done by friction from ground frame is zero.

  • A horizontal force is applied on a system of two blocks A and B and the nature of friction is static.
  • Depending on the point of observation and values given work done by friction can be positive, zero and negative.
  • But total work is not zero as there is some work being done here scientifically even if we cant see its effect as conventional examples of work done.
  • Therfore, The incorrect statement is: total work done by friction from ground frame is zero.
