The muddy imprints belonged to Griffin. He had managed to make himself invisible after drinking a special medicine, which he had made himself after years of research.
The medicine lowered the refractive index of his body; in order to be invisible, he had to remove his clothes. When the boys saw the muddy footprints appearing from nowhere, it was actually Griffin walking on the road with muddy feet.
