The two characteristic properties of Carbon are :
1)Versatile Nature : Carbon has compounds in almost everything. All of our day to day products are made up of carbon compounds. Like soap, food etc. Even we ourselves are made up of carbon.
2)Tetracovalency : Carbon is tetravalent ie. it forms four bonds with different monovalent atoms to give rise to highly stable compounds like hydrocarbons etc. bcz single bonds of carbon are very strong.
Hope this works.
