The story focuses on family relations and its importance. We can see how the three siblings are attached to eachother. The mother is already dead and the father dies during the war. Though the house is destroyed and the children face many problems, they do not leave each other. The only sister, Lucia suffers from tuberculosis and both the brothers work hard to earn money to pay for her treatment. Lucia also loves her brothers very much. This can be understood from the fact that she is happy to see them when they go to meet her at the nursing home.

They (Nicola and Jacopo) were very determined ,hardworking,trustworthy and focused. They never cared for their comfort but worked tirelessly to pay the fee of the hospital in which her sister (Lucia) was admitted.
Lucia also loved her brothers very much. And she liked when her brothers come to visit her and to pay off the fee for her treatment. This shows that how those three brothers and sister were deeply attached to each other and also cared for each other.
