by Pythagoras theorem you get square of the length of base and altitude is equal to the square of the length of the hypotenuse. as base and altitude are equal, the equation you get is

2a^2=72

a^2=36

a=6

Let the equal sides of the triangle be a.

Square of hypotenuse =  72 cm^2

According to Pythagoras Theorem,

Sum of square of sides = Square of Hypotenuse

So,

 {a}^{2}  +  {a}^{2}  = 72 \\ 2 {a}^{2}  = 72 \\  {a}^{2}  =  \frac{72}{2}  \\  {a}^{2}  = 36 \\ a =  \sqrt{36}  = 6 \: cm

Hence, the length of the equal sides is 6 cm.
