The two members of group 14 in the Periodic Table are carbon (atomic no. 6) and
silicon (atomic no. 14).
(a) Write electronic configuration of both elements.
(b) Deduce their valencies.
(c) Name the element which is more electronegative with proper reason.
(d) Find out whether these elements are metal or non-metal. Give reason for your

a)  electronic configuration

    carbon = 2,4     silicon = 2,8,4  

b) silicon as well as carbon has valency  4. this is because they have four valence electrons in there outermost shell. as it is difficult to give aor take 4 electrons these elements share electrons.

c) carbon is more electronegative than silicon because carbon forms more stable bonds than silicon.

d) carbon is a non metal whereas silicon is metalloid. carbon shares it's electrons whereas silicon even donates or take 4 electrons from others. it even shares electron like carbon. thus carbon is a non metal and silicon is a metalloid.
