Alkenes have a double bond, which is rigid, so chemical groups attached to the carbon atoms on the 2 ends of the double bond can be on the same side of the molecule [‘cis’ isomers] or on opposite sides of the double bond [‘trans’ isomers].
The double bond in alkenes prevents them from having left- and right-handed isomers found in some molecules with single bonds such as sugars and amino acids.
