All the above transmission channels are used for LAN or WAN.

Types of Transmission channels:

. There are only 3 types of transmission channels:

            . Twisted Pair Cable

            . Coaxial Cables

            . Fiber-Optic Cables

a) Twisted pair cable:

. It is a cable that has 2 wires that are twisted around each other.

. They are usually used for Telephone and computer Applications.

        Advantages of Twisted pair cable:

. They are very cheap and also easy to splice.

. They are less likely to cause interference between themselves.

         Disadvantages:

. It is difficult to connect to a terminating power.

         . It is large.

b) Coaxial Cables:

. It is a type of cable that has an inner conductor which is surrounded by a Tubular layer that is insulating, surrounded by a conducting shield.

. Many coaxial cables also have an insulating outer jacket.

          Advantages of Coaxial Cables:

. It has a sufficient frequency range to support many channels at the same time.

          Disadvantages:

. More expensive to buy compared to twisted cable.

c) Fiber-Optic Cable (or) Radio Waves:

. It does the transmission of light impulses through glass, plastic, or fiber wires.

           Advantages:

. It has a high frequency.

           Disadvantages:

           . Very high cost.
