The Harvest Festival of Uruka
Magh Bihu is the harvest festival celebrated in Assam in the month of January. India being primarily an agrarian society, harvest festivals are celebrated with much pomp in several parts of India. The festival is also important in several parts of Indo-tibetan region and the North-east. The festival is marked with feasts and family and friends gathering to celebrate.
Uruka:
Uruka is celebrated on the eve of Magh Bihu. The festival is more associated with food traditions. Women prepare traditional items like curd, chira, pitha etc. A bonfire is lit to mark the week-long celebrations of Magh Bihu and families meet to play traditional games and also dance around the bonfire. People make belaghars (huts made with the leaves and grass from the harvested fields) and in the morning set fire to these make-shift huts and pray to the God of Fire.
MaghBihu or its just called Bihu is the most important festival that is celebrated in Assam.
During this festival, a lot of celebrations and dancing is involved. The most grandiose part is the Uruka dance.
