The valency of oxygen is 2. According to the theory, the valency depends upon the no.of electrons in the outermost shell. Then why the valency of oxygen is 2 instead of 6?​

Every element tries to form octate ion. We need 8 electrons in the outer most shell. For oxygen it hae 6 electrons in outermost shell. so it is easy to take two electrons, than giving 6. so oxygen valency is 2
