because there is one electron in its valence shell and hence to get stable it needs to loose one electron

and thats why its valency is 1

As you know metals have the capability to lose electrons and become stable.

So according to that Na has 1 electron in its last shell

so have the capability to lose 1 electron and become stable.

therefore its valence is 1
