a^2 + b^2 where a - b and ab = 3

we know

(a + b)^2 = a^2 + b^2 + 2 ab

then

(a + b)^2 - 2 ab = a^2 + b^2

⇒(a + b)^2 - 2(3) = a^2 + b^2

⇒a^2 + b^2 = (a + b)^2 - 6
