Answer :

a = -4

Solution :

• Note : The possible values of the variable (here x) for which the polynomial becomes zero are called its zeros .

ie ; If x = a is a zero of the polynomial p(x) , then p(a) = 0 .

Here ,

The given polynomial is ;

4x⁴ + 2x³ - 3x² - ax - 28 .

Let the given polynomial be p(x) .

Thus ,

p(x) = 4x⁴ + 2x³ - 3x² - ax - 28

Also ,

It is given that , x = -2 is a zero of the given polynomial p(x) .

Thus ,

=> p(-2) = 0

=> 4•(-2)⁴ + 2•(-2)³ - 3•(-2)² - a•(-2) - 28 = 0

=> 64 - 16 - 12 + 2a - 28 = 0

=> 2a + 8 = 0

=> 2a = -8

=> a = -8/2

=> a = -4

Hence , a = -4 .
