The value of ground state energy of hydrogen atom is: -13.6 eV; (i) What does

i) The negative sign indicates that the electron is bound to the nucleus.

ii)  Eₙ = (-13.6)Z²/n eV

n--> energy level

Z--> atomic number

for the first excited state of hydrogen:

n=2 Z=1,

E₂ = (-13.6) (1²)/2 = -6.8 eV

therefore the energy required = 6.8 eV
