Given:

Distance between (2,k) and (1,7) is 5.

To Find:

Value of k

Solution:

5 =  \sqrt{ {(1 - 2)}^{2}  +  {(7 - k)}^{2} }

5 =  \sqrt{ {( - 1)}^{2}  +  49 - 14k +  {k}^{2}  }

5 =  \sqrt{1 + 49 - 14k +  {k}^{2} }

5 =  \sqrt{50 - 14k +  {k}^{2} }

 {(5)}^{2}  = 50 - 14k +  {k}^{2}

 {k}^{2}  - 14k + 50 - 25 = 0

 {k}^{2}  - 14k + 25 = 0

By using Quadratic Formula, we get

k =  \frac{ - 14 \: ± \: 4 \sqrt{6} }{50}
