(x-y)^2=x^2+y^2+2xy

(2/3)^2+2*1/2=x^2+y^2

4/9+1=13/9

x - y =  \frac{3}{2}

 {(x - y)}^{2}  =  \frac{9}{4}

 {x}^{2}  +  {y}^{2}  - 2xy =  \frac{9}{4}

 {x}^{2}  +  {y}^{2}  =  \frac{9}{4}  + 2 \times  \frac{1}{2}

 =  \frac{13}{4}
