Given info : reaction of H₂S + HNO₃ gives NO + xS + H₂O.

To find : The value of x in the given reaction

Solution : here, H₂S + HNO₃ ⇒ NO + xS + H₂O

Let's balance the chemical reaction using hit and trial method.

Step 1 : balance oxygen atoms.

left side 3 O atoms and right side only 2 O atoms.

If we multiply 2 with HNO₃ , 2 with NO and 4 with H₂O

Now we have,

H₂S + 2HNO₃ ⇒ 2NO + xS + 4H₂O.

We see oxygen must be balanced but Hydrogen remains unbalanced (as 4 H atoms in left side and 8 H atoms in right side)

To balance H atom, multiply 3 with H₂S

We get,

3H₂S + 2HNO₃ ⇒ 2NO + xS + 4H₂O.

For balancing chemical equation, x must be 3.therefore the value of x = 3.
