2  = a 2 −2ab+b  2

 

So, (x−y)  2= x  2  −2xy+y 2

⇒ (3)  2 = x  2  −20+y 2

 

⇒ 9 = x 2 +y 2 −20

⇒ 9+20 =x 2  +y  2

 

⇒ x  2  +y  2   = 29
