Alpha = 1-i / 1-n
1-4.20/ 1-5. (5 ions after dissociation)
Alpha= 0.80

Answer: The degree of dissociation is 80%

Explanation:

Vant hoff factor is the ratio of observed colligative property to the calculated colligative property.

i=\frac{\text {observed colligative property}}{\text {Calculated Colligative property}}

Al_2(SO_4)_3\rightarrow 2Al^{3+}+3SO_4^{2-}

 0.1            0                0

0.1-0.1\alpha        0.2\alpha          0.3\alpha

Total moles after dissociation =0.1-0.1\alpha+0.2\alpha+0.3\alpha=0.1+0.4\alpha

thus i=\frac{0.1+0.4\alpha}{0.1}

4.20=\frac{0.1+0.4\alpha}{0.1}

\alpha=0.8

Thus degree of dissociation is 80%.
