Valency of metal = 2

Explanation:

Given:  The vapor density of metal chloride is 47.5. Equivalent Mass of metal oxide is 20.

Find: Valency of metal.

Solution:

Vapor density of metal chloride = 47.5

Molar mass = 2 x VD = 2 x 47.5 = 95

Equivalent mass of metal = 20

If metal is :

univalent, metal chloride will be MCl

Bivalent, metal chloride will be MCl2

Divalent, metal chloride will be MCl3

Molar mass should be 47.5, 95 or 142.5 for MCl, MCl2 and MCl3 respectively.

So metal chloride is MCl2 and metal is bivalent.

Valency of metal = 2
