If we consider a stationary wave on a taught string, the speed of the wave = (string tension * mass /unit length) ^ 0.5
wave speed = frequency * wavelength
and, wavelength = n * L/2
where n = 1,2,3 …(ie 1st, 2nd, 3rd harmonic) and L = string length
So the equations have to be mutually satisfied - ie only certain standing waves can form given the string length, tension and mass per unit length.
If there was no wave speed there would be no standing wave!
I hope this helps u
