The video mentions how older generations oppose offshore oil drilling near their native lands; however, some younger native Alaskans promote offshore drilling. Why does this dichotomy, or contrast, exist?

Answer:

Hey there,

The older generations oppose offshore oil drilling near their native lands because they feel that oil drilling is fraught with risks like oils spillage that can have an adverse impact on their surrounding environment. It could threaten the seals, walrus and whales on whom they depend for food. However, a lot of younger native Alaskans support offshore drilling because they feel that can help them in economic realization. Hence, there is a contrast of thoughts in the region

Answer: Alaska is home to some of the most undeveloped and remote areas in the United States. The video compares this region to the region around the Gulf of Mexico. The Gulf of Mexico region has a developed infrastructure, with plenty of major cities, airports, and highways. Crews arriving to help clean up the area after the Deepwater Horizon spill could access the region easily. In contrast, none of these conditions exist in the remote Alaskan wilderness. A spill in that area, even a small one, would be extremely difficult, if not impossible, to contain and clean up.
