Answer: Residual volume

Residual volume is the volume of the air that is left in the lung after a maximal forceful exhalation. It is the amount of air that is always present in the lung and can not be expired.

Doctors test for the residual volume which help them to know the functioning of the lung. It is necessary to have a some air remain in the lung which keep it from collapsing.

Values  between 75 percent to 125 percent of average value are considered normal.
