The normal glomerular filtration rate amounts to about 180 litres each 24 hours. This is 4.5 times the amount of fluid in the entire body. The renal tubules reabsorb about 99% of the filtrate into the blood, leaving only about 1.5 litres to be excreted as urine during a 24-hour period.
