The volume of ice is more than the volume of water that has been frozen. A cylindrical glass, with diameter 7 cm and height 12 cm, containing water has to be kept in the freezer. What should be the level of water in the glass so that ice fills up the glass just up to the brim. (Given that volume is inversely proportional to density; density of water = 1 g/ ml; density of ice = 0.92 g/ ml)

Answer:

• The bonds between water molecules are stronger, they are less likely to break and re-form as they do in the liquid state.

• As a liquid, water molecules are constantly moving (forming and breaking hydrogen bonds) resulting in less expansion.

• When water freezes, volume expands by approximately 9%.
