The volume of a sphere is directly proportional to the cube of radius of sphere, thereby also proportional to the cube of diameter of sphere.
Since volumetric strain is the change in volume divided by original volume and strain in diameter is change in diameter by original diameter, therefore volumetric strain is directly proportional to the strain in diameter.
