we all know that pressure is indirectly proportional to area so if area is large pressure is very less.....so therefore the wall of dam are broad at is base to reduce the pressure

Reason:

Water's pressure increases with depth and hence in a dam the maximum pressure is at its base so it is constructed broad and strong to bear the pressure of water.
