The walls and ceiling of a hotel room are to be painted. The ceiling is a 16-foot square, and the walls are 8 feet tall.

What is the surface area of the walls and ceiling to be painted?

Answer:

Area of ceiling = 16 ft sq. = length of side × length of side

therefore length of side = square root (16)

=4 ft.

surface area of one wall = 4×8= 32 foot square.

surface area of 4 walls and ceiling = 4×32+16

=144 foot square.
