The water in a rectangular tank having a base 80 m by 60 m is 6.5 m deep. in what time can the water be emptied by a pipe of which the cross-section is a square of side 20 cm, if the water runs through the pipe at the rate of 20 km per hour?

Time taken to complete 20 km by water in a pipe = 1 hour.

Time for 1 m =   \frac{3600s}{20000} = 0.18s

Volume of the tank = 80m x 60m x 6.5m  = (480 x 65)m = 31200m^3

Volume of the pipe = 0.2m x 0.2m x 1m (per 0.18 second) = 0.04m^3

Time taken to empty the tank =   \frac{31200}{0.04} x 0.18s

= 140400s = 39 hours

So it would take 39 hours for the pipe to empty the tank.

Hope it helps You
