The water surface of a still pond shows a surface because it is very still in nature.

Explanation:

The surface water is so still as it appears to be calm. There is near to no forces (group of forces / force) acting on the surface.

It is also equally distributed upon the surface of water. This is due to best stability attain by the water inside the pond (pit). It zcquires minimum volume.

Transverse ripples are formed if someone touches that water. For this condition, there must be no wind. This is air but with infinitely slow velocity which directly or indirectly does not affect the surface of water.

It can not be seen in heights because there is lot of wind in height.
