Hello dear,

◆ Answer -

λ2 = 486 nm

◆ Explanation -

# Given -

λ1 = 656 nm

λ2 = ?

# Solution -

Wavelength of line in balmer series is calculated by -

1/λ = R (1/2² - 1/n²)

For 1st line in Balmer series, n = 3

1/λ1 = R (1/2² - 1/3²)

1/λ1 = R (1/4 - 1/9)

1/λ1 = 5R/36

1/R = 5λ1/36

For 2nd line in Balmer series, n = 2

1/λ2 = R (1/2² - 1/4²)

1/λ2 = R (1/4 - 1/16)

1/λ2 = 3R/16

λ2 = 16/3R

λ2 = 16/3 × 5λ1/36

λ2 = 20λ1/27

λ2 = 20×656/27

λ2 = 486 nm

Therefore, wavelength of 2nd line in Balmer series is 486 nm.
