In networking, topology refers to the layout of a computer network.

Topology can be described either physically or logically.

Physical topology means the placement of the elements of the network, including the location of the devices or the layout of the cables.

Logical topology maps the flow of data, regardless of the physical layout.

Two networks could for example have completely different physical topologies and have the same logical topology, or vice versa.

What are the different topologies?

There are several different layouts that a network topology can form, for example a bus network topology.

In the bus network each workstation is connected to a bus, a transmission path where signals are dropped off or picked up. This means that each workstation is effectively connected to every other workstation in the network.

Another topology is a star network where a central point, computer or server, is connected to all the workstations directly.

There are several common physical topologies, aside from  bus and star there is a token ring, ring, mesh and tree.
