Yes , according to me owning a pet is a lifetime commitment .This is because  it is us who are bringing an innocent animal home. So it remains our duty to look after it because they deserve a good life. In Maxwell's case we can see that he was genuinely worried about his pet otter,Mijbil. He was concerned about how to take him to London with him and what would be it's discomforts while travelling. This was just an instance showing that what are the responsibilities one  has towards their pet. Throughout our their whole life we need to take care of them because they cannot speak up for themselves .We have to remain committed towards them the same as Maxwell did for Mijbil. And hence the above statement is JUSTIFIED.
