A forest is an area on land forming an ecosystem. It is a precious resource given by nature to us. Forest constitutes our life line in various ways. These are as follows.
1) Preservation of the water cycle -
Forests maintain water cycle on Earth. Plants in forests absorb water from the soil through their roots. Through transpiration plants release excess water into the atmosphere in the form of water vapour. Through condensation, water vapour from the oceans rises in the atmosphere and condenses to form clouds. Precipitation involves moving of clouds on to the land due to sea breeze and result in rainfall.
2) Maintenance of temperature and oxygen levels -
During photosynthesis, plants take in carbon dioxide to prepare food thereby decreasing its excess amount in the atmosphere. Also plants release oxygen as a by-product during photosynthesis. Oxygen is essential for animals and human beings. Plants also regulate the temperature in atmosphere.
3) Prevention of soil erosion and dust storms -
Trees in forests hold the soil firmly with their roots which bind with the soil particles and prevent it from erosion. Trees also regulate strong winds and reduce dust storms.
4) Forests give us various products -
Trees provide us rich quality of wood.
Trees give us variety of vegetables, fruits and medical products.
Trees give us raw material for paper industry, matchstick industry and coir industry.
Trees provide us latex, gum and resins.
Forests provide us with spices and oils.
Forests are natural habitat for a variety of wild plants and animals. There is a lot of chance for inter breeding organisms.
