The weight Mg of an extended body is generally shown in a diagram to act through the centre of mass. Does it mean that the earth does not attract other particles?

No, it does not mean that there is no attraction of other particles by the earth.

Explanation:

  • An infinite number of particles are present in an extended body and an attraction of such particles is done by the earth.
  • Rather than displaying all the force, for the clarity purpose, generally it is represented by the single force, Mg, via the body’s centre of mass.
  • It is to be noted that each particle is not attracted by the earth. All the forces of attraction produce a resultant, which is Mg. This will act in the mass’ centre (total mass is denoted as M).
