Graphite and platinum electrodes are considered inert because in the systems where they are utilized, they do not participate in any chemical reactions whatsoever. The electrode materialss are neither consumed or added to.

In a system where the electrodes are consumed, they would be presumed to be ert.. if that were actually a word. :-/
