Education is a tool that if used correctly, can improve the faculties, widen the horizon of the mind and compel an individual to analyse people, factors and situations. It gives people the power to be more aware of things and occurrences. As these people share their views, they spread awareness. Thus, education seeks to put a mirror to society. Well read writers often use their skills to touch upon sensitive topics, which society tends to hush up. A lot of reporters have realised the futility of trying to stifle the voice of victims of social injustice and have now taken to raising such issues in the media. Education thus mirrors society and in the process spreads awareness. However, the aim of education is not restricted to just spreading awareness, but goes much beyond it.

While awareness is the first step, education demands action. An educated mind needs to think of the problem, brainstorm some solutions and then work on the plausibility of implementing those solutions.  The real purpose of education is not just to put a mirror to society, but to ensure that the mirrors are changed into windows, through which improvements can make their way into society. This has always been the ultimate purpose of education. Some of the educated Indians of the pre-independence times did indeed transform the mirrors to windows, including leaders like Bal Gangadhar Tilak, who understood the need of the hour and put his education to good use by creating awareness among the Indians. He boldly raised the issues plaguing society at that time, in his dailies and then made efforts to address the same problems. Similarly, Mahatma Gandhi’s educated mindset propelled him to inspire the masses to fight against inequality in a unique yet effective manner. While times change and so do the issues, a sound education continues to bestow upon an individual the power to be the agent of change and open up new windows of hope.

Answer:

EDUCATION.

Harris has rightly said that the whole purpose of education is to turn mirrors into windows. The phrase to turn mirrors into windows means to peep inside and see what one is. It also means to look into oneself to see the world. Harris means through education one must open himself to world or reflect what he possess.
