It can also be taken as , let the width =y\ cm,

then the length =3y\ cm,

because since the width is one third of the length ,it is as same as length is thrice the width.

We know the equation to find the perimeter of a rectangle.

Perimeter = 2(l+b),

We are asked to calculate the width ,that is b.  

it is given that perimeter is 96\ cm

therefore

                  2(l+b)=96\\\\2(3y+y)=96\\\\2(4y)=96\\\\8y=96\\\\y=96/8=12\ cm

That is width is 12\ cm, and hence the length =3y=3(12)=36\ cm.
