Let length be x inch

width=x-1 inch

According to question,

x(x-1)=72

x^2-x-72=0

x^2-(9x-8x)-72=0

x^2-9x+8x-72=0

x(x-9)+8(x-9)=0

(x+8) (x-9) =0

x+8=0 x= -8 (neglect as side can't be -ve)

x-9=0

x=9

So length=9 inch

width=x-1

=9-1=8inch

Therefore, length and width of rectangle is 9 inch and 8 inch respectively.
