'Terrible fish' probably refers to old age which is a slow process but a definite one. A fish when at great depths is not visible but when it rises to shallow depths it can be seen easily by us. Similarly, effects of old age cannot be felt when young but slowly in due course of time old age is sure to leave its mark on people.
